“In October 2023, Michelle began experiencing severe pain and irregular bowel habits. With a family history of coeliac disease, she consulted her GP, who dismissed her concerns. Seeking a second opinion, another GP ordered scans and blood tests. Soon after, Michelle received a devastating call—she had bowel cancer.

Determined to fight, Michelle underwent treatment, but her tumour completely obstructed her bowel, requiring surgery to create a stoma. The stoma, along with a hernia she named Hector, deeply affected her self-esteem. Seeing inadequate stoma care at the local hospital, I wrote to the minister and hospital director, advocating for better staff training.

During chemo, Michelle bonded with fellow patients, especially a young mother who attended with her baby. One day, the woman stopped coming. Each week, Michelle searched for her, but she never returned. This heartbreaking reality forced Michelle to confront her own mortality.

Approaching her 50th birthday in September 2024, Michelle decided to raise awareness and funds to help others. Until then, she had kept her diagnosis private, feeling stigma around bowel cancer. To support her, my son and I shaved our heads, raising over $8,000 for Bowel Cancer Australia at an event attended by over 150 people, with live music, raffle prizes, and screening information.

Despite immense challenges, Michelle exhausted all treatment options. She lost her battle on 19 January 2025, surrounded by family.” ~ Rachel
