“The inspiration behind my support for Bowel Cancer Awareness Month comes from my cousin’s diagnosis in 2020. In 2021 my beautiful, happy, and bubbly cousin aged only 32 years passed away from bowel cancer after being diagnosed just 11 months prior. During those 11 months she was a huge advocate for helping to raise awareness of bowel cancer symptoms to help prevent others from being diagnosed too late. She did this during the darkest time in her life.

Tash was one of those people who feel like sunshine the instant you start talking to them. You know the ones. The human forms of sunflowers in my opinion. I am so happy to have known her.

In this past year, I have grown to be more comfortable sharing on social media for my developing book business, Birchy’s Books, and decided that in her memory and that of my beautiful Nanny (just shy of 99 years old), who also passed away from bowel cancer, I would post to help create awareness of the symptoms, just as Tash did.

This then led to spotting the ‘bum shorts‘ on the Bowel Cancer Australia website, and my family and I decided to do a walk in our local park as a fun way to remember our loved ones – Tash and Nanny – while also creating awareness of the disease. We hope to get a bunch of bums together next year for our walk, making it an annual event.”. ~ Courtney.

Thank you very much, Courtney, for sharing your personal story and inspiration for your fundraiser. What a lovely way to remember and honour the legacies of your beautiful cousin Tash and Nanny!

Your awareness and fundraising efforts are greatly appreciated and will have a direct impact, helping to save lives and improve the health and wellbeing of people living with bowel cancer.
