As someone who was fit, active, and had just crossed the finish line of a half marathon in Queenstown, I simply knew something wasn’t right. When I shared this concern with my GP, the testing started, a full CT body scan and comprehensive blood tests, yet nothing appeared abnormal. Trusting my instincts, I advocated for further exploration, and I’m deeply grateful that my GP supported this decision. What I had anticipated as a routine colonoscopy became a life-changing moment when I woke to hear the words – Cancer. Within two weeks, I was in surgery. The outpouring of support from my family and friends during this time was truly overwhelming, and I cannot speak highly enough of my specialist team of doctors and nurses who cared for me throughout my long hospital stay. Their expertise and compassion made an immeasurable difference. I’ve learned firsthand that maintaining good health and fitness not only enriches life – it can also make the journey through recovery more manageable. Keeping fit and eating well does not exempt anybody from cancer I know that personally. However, it has given me a voice to spread the word that bowel cancer if diagnosed early through screening can be lifesaving. My one piece of advice: Never dismiss any symptoms or changes that you may experience in your body. This disease is silent and if you can access screening then just do it. Published: November 13, 2025
