I was admitted to hospital and the next day had a colonoscopy. After the colonoscopy I didn’t expect to hear the words: ‘You have cancer.’At 38, I was diagnosed with a 5cm tumour and was told that it had spread to nearby lymph nodes. Early on surgery wasn’t an option – so I began chemotherapy on Christmas Eve to shrink the tumour and stop it from spreading further. Before treatment, we went through a fast-tracked IVF cycle (emotionally and physically exhausting) and then started chemo. The side effects were tough, but I held onto hope. The good news came in April, after 8 cycles of chemo my scans showed there was no spread and no active cancer present in my body.On June 6th, I had surgery to remove part of my bowel and the nearby lymph nodes. I’m now adjusting to life with a temporary ileostomy bag.Recovery will take time—but I’m getting closer to the finish line. My one piece of advice: If something doesn’t feel right—don’t ignore it.
