Christine M’s story

At 54, I went to my GP with vague symptoms of bloating. Thankfully, my GP took my concerns seriously and referred me for a colonoscopy. During the procedure, doctors found a 2cm tumour in my sigmoid colon. It was diagnosed as a stage 1 T2 adenocarcinoma. Within three weeks, I underwent surgery to remove 20cm of bowel and 20 lymph nodes.

I feel incredibly lucky that my cancer was found so early and had not spread at all. My story is also a reminder that not all cancer experiences involve chemotherapy. Six months on, I continue to be closely monitored and remain deeply grateful for the excellent healthcare we have in Australia. I am also very thankful for a GP who acted on very mild symptoms.

My one piece of advice:

I would encourage anyone with concerns, even vague ones, to have a colonoscopy if recommended. Early detection of bowel cancer can make all the difference. It is treatable and survival rates are high when caught early.
