After two failed attempts at being seen in the ER I organised a colonoscopy and gastroscopy in early September 2025. The results came back as Chron’s disease with a small bowel stricter that would eventually require surgery. After two months of various antibiotics and steroids I was still experiencing vomiting and changed bowel habits every fortnight and losing weight weekly. In December 2025 I was admitted to hospital, after a week of no bowel movement, another colonoscopy was done. The next day I had a right hemicolectomy and was told a week later I’d had Stage 3 bowel cancer! I spent my 44th birthday and 22 days in hospital.January 2026, I started chemotherapy. I’m six rounds in and it’s a real physical and emotional battle every day.I’ve also got a BRAF gene mutation which means I’m on immunotherapy drugs as well.I am blessed with the most supportive family and friends. Along with Bowel Cancer Australia this seemingly lonely journey is bearable thanks to their knowledge and understanding. My one piece of advice: Listen to your body and don’t dismiss the warning signs of bowel cancer. Advocate for yourself and if your cancer is rare or has unusual characteristics get an extended molecular test or genetic test to help determine the best treatment for you. Published: March 9, 2026
