Katrina G’s story Kick Ass All Decembeard Dry July Early-Onset Early-Onset Loved One In Memory Kick Ass Late-Onset Lived experience Loved One Nearly two years ago now, after a month of intermittent stomach cramps, a doctor’s visit, an ultrasound and blood test which came back clear, I presented to our local ED after my pains increased significantly the night before. They did an ultrasound and bloods…all clear again. Nothing to suggest cancer. I was fit, a non-smoker, only drank an occasional wine and ate healthy. The doctor was going to send me home but decided to do a CT scan at the last minute. It showed a tumour obstructing my bowel and I heard those words ‘it’s most likely cancer’. A few hours later I was wheeled into surgery and woke up with a temporary colostomy. Stage 3 cancer with 17 lymph nodes affected. I had 6 months of FOLFOX chemo which has left me with a rather nasty case of neuropathy. But there is no sign of cancer and I’m still here! I’m very grateful for the support from my family, friends and the hospital staff. My one piece of advice: Cancer doesn’t discriminate. You’re never ‘too young’ or ‘too healthy’ to get cancer. Don’t ignore subtle symptoms. Advocate for yourself, ask questions and demand proper testing. Published: March 18, 2026
