During a colonoscopy a 7cm tumour was found, 1.3cm inside me. I had some symptoms that lead to a few minor “no coffee” diet changes. What followed was a CT scan, bloods, MRI, oncology consult, radiation consult and four new teeny tattoos. Markers for 25 radiation sessions over 24 days. Aswell as a port inserted prior to nine rounds of FOLFOX chemo over 18 weeks. I experienced exhaustion and neuropathy and issue after issue with port access. The next step was consult with the Lower GI team at the cancer centre in Melbourne, with plans to do a colonoscopy to see how I had responded to treatment. The plan was for a non-surgical cure. Sadly, that didn’t happen. Whilst the cancer had reduced following the treatment I received, it was still present. Surgery was booked, an ultra-low anterior resection to remove the cancer. What followed was a 6.5-hour surgery, ileostomy, and 10 days in hospital. I’m now considered cancer free. I have a way to go but am taking things one day at a time. My one piece of advice: Be kind to you. Listen to your body and surround yourself with kindness. If needed, seek a second opinion. Published: March 9, 2026
