“Running for Dad: A Marathon of Love and Purpose

This March, I laced up my running shoes and took on the challenge of the Inverloch Running Festival, running 42.2km in memory of my incredible father, who lost his battle with bowel cancer in July 2024 at just 63 years old.

Losing Dad was heartbreaking, but I wanted to honour his life in a way that made a real difference. Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers, yet it often goes undetected until it’s too late. Early detection is crucial, and by taking on this marathon, I hoped to raise awareness and funds to combat this devastating disease.

Thanks to the generosity of so many, our fundraising efforts raised $3,100 for Bowel Cancer Australia—funds that will go directly to helping save the lives of those affected by bowel cancer.

The marathon itself was tough, but every step was worth it. It was super challenging, yet incredibly rewarding, knowing that each mile was for Dad and for everyone impacted by bowel cancer. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family—my 4 brothers, my wife Marije, my mother Bernadette, my aunties—and the amazing Inverloch community. A huge thank you to the Inverloch Running Festival team for organising such an incredible event and to every single person who donated, cheered me on, and helped make this journey so meaningful.

Dad, this one was for you. 💙” ~ Matthew

Warmest thanks and congratulations, Matthew. What a lovely way to honour the memory of your dad. Your support is greatly appreciated and will have a direct impact, helping us to champion what matters most to people impacted by bowel cancer and empower everyone affected to live their best life.
