I was feeling fine, but there was quite a bit of blood appearing in my stool - I just put it down to haemorrhoids.

My partner kept telling me to see the doctor, but of course, I did the male thing and ignored her pleas.

After experiencing a bowel motion consisting only of blood, I finally went to the GP.

I was admitted to hospital with heart problems in late December 2011 and needed to have 3 stents inserted. I was admitted again in February 2012, because of more problems.

Two months later, while visiting my doctor, I discussed having reflux problems. He suggested I see a gastro to find out what the problem was and a way to treat it.

My grandfather died of bowel cancer and so my daughter Sarah and my daughter-in-law Rachel, who are both nurses, would often nag me about getting checked.

It was September when I visited my GP. I was experiencing a low mood and significant fatigue. A blood test showed my iron to be at a count of 6 so I was promptly booked in for an iron infusion.

My iron deficiency was attributed to me being a woman (menstruation), a mother (having lost blood during delivery and breastfeeding) and a vegetarian (19 years without ever having low iron).

With inconsistent blood results and an iron level which dropped again after the infusion proved none of these to be the cause of my issues.

In March 2017, at 41 years of age, I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer.

My symptoms were off and on. Tiredness, bowel changes, stomach cramps. I cut out foods and drinks that made me feel sick and experienced unexplained fevers. I knew something wasn’t quite right, but tests didn’t show anything. I’d had enough and demanded some answers. I told my doctor I wasn’t letting up until I knew what was wrong....I requested a colonoscopy, stool test and inflammatory marker blood test (CRP) to name a few.

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in late 2014, at the age of 37.  I had experienced mid-day fatigue the year prior, which I attributed to job dissatisfaction. I also had the occasional feeling of nausea and random severe stomach pains, which I thought was a dairy intolerance.
