My advice to anyone else going through this is to give yourself sufficient time to adjust to the changes in your body. Seek support early. Use every service that is made available to you. Most importantly - be kind to yourself!

After a positive screen test in 2009 at age 50, I was instructed to have a colonoscopy. The procedure in 2010 found a polyp which was removed and as a result, my surgeon suggested I have a further colonoscopy in 2013.

This procedure uncovered a small cancer in the left descending colon.

My face was my reason for seeing my GP. I really wasn't that worried about the lesion on the side of my face. After all my neighbour, who is a plastic surgeon had told me it was a simple basal cell carcinoma (BCC).

I'd had them before and had them dealt with when time allowed for a visit to the GP. The rectal bleeding I was experiencing wasn't unusual. I had lived with a haemorrhoid for over 15 years at least, so a bit of blood wasn't a concern. I'd seen that before and wasn't worried, though it seemed a little heavier lately.

I threw away the National Bowel Cancer Screening kit I received in the mail thinking it was an invasion of privacy – yet screening is the most important thing you can do!

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in October 2013.
