Raising awareness of bowel cancer is a cause close to the heart of Hoppers Crossing woman Julie Toner.

She was diagnosed with the illness in 2012 at the age of 40, although she was not showing any symptoms at the time.

It’s easy to see why Julie Toner was named Wyndham council’s 2016 citizen of the year.

The Hoppers Crossing resident, who last week notched up her 29th consecutive year manning the phones at the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal, is also a tireless fundraiser for the Cancer Council and Bowel Cancer Australia.

This week four years ago, Hoppers Crossing’s Julie Toner was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Now, she’s celebrating as Wyndham council’s citizen of the year.

The lifelong Wyndham resident, who is in remission, said her diagnosis had inspired her to raise funds for Bowel Cancer Australia to raise awareness of the illness.

She runs fundraisers that have raised almost $30,000 to date.

A Hoppers Crossing resident is using the silly season to raise much-needed funds for the battle against bowel cancer.

Julie Toner is using her Wyndham council neighbourhood community grant to host a Santa walk next month, with all proceeds going to Bowel Cancer Australia.

Despite having a family history of bowel cancer, Ms Toner was floored when she was diagnosed with a stage four cancer in August 2012, only two weeks after her 40th birthday. "I didn't have any symptoms whatsoever; it was just a gut feeling ... I really had to go and get tested," she said.
