In what has become an annual event in loving memory of her brother Kenneth, Margaret has taken part in the Bowral Classic cycle since the inaugural event took place in October 2016, and has supported Bowel Cancer Australia on each occasion.

“My reason for supporting Bowel Cancer Australia was that my brother Kenneth was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2015, after having had Crohn's disease for over 30 years,” said Margaret.

“Our whole family came to Bowral for the weekend to celebrate the last two Bowral Classic events and my son-in-law, Ben and Kenneth's son-in-law, also called Ben have ridden with me and raised money as well. It really has helped our family to be able to remember Kenneth in this way and gives us some comfort in knowing that the funds raised through the ride go to such a worthy cause,” Margaret added.

Kenneth has been Margaret’s inspiration to keep going during the 120km ride every year.

“Whenever I start feeling worn out, my muscles start getting sore, or the Southern Highland hills seem just too steep, I just think of my brother, of how much he suffered over many years, how he never complained and always had a smile for everyone,” said Margaret.

“I then remember that my pain is only temporary and is nothing compared to the pain that Kenneth had experienced. Also knowing that friends and family have donated to Bowel Cancer Australia helped me to keep going and reach the finish line. Sadly, my brother lost his battle with bowel cancer on 8 September 2017 at the age of 53. It was hard doing the ride in October 2017, but I knew he was with me in spirit whilst I was riding.” Margaret added.

To date Margaret and her supporters have raised more than $4,800 to help saves lives and improve the health and wellbeing of people living with bowel cancer.

Margaret looks forward to supporting Bowel Cancer Australia again this year through the Bowral Classic bike ride, and we very much appreciate her generous support.
