Now in its seventh year, Bowel Cancer Australia’s annual Decembeard campaign starts today!

A hair–raising fundraiser held during the month of December (1st-31st December), Decembeard® Australia encourages men to grow a beard in the final month of the year to raise awareness and much needed funds to beat bowel cancer.

Beards aren't just for hipsters, grandpas, men that ride motorbikes or people that are too lazy to shave. Anyone can help make real change happen.

All you need to do is grow a beard or some chin stubble and promote your facial hair to raise awareness and funds for Australia’s second deadliest cancer - bowel cancer.

Men with existing beards can get involved too, by taking one of our Beard Challenges – shaving, dying or decorating their chin-curtains, or playing the role of fundraising team captain and using their beard to inspire others to get involved.

Women and children are also encouraged to take part in Decembeard® Australia by making or faking a beard, hosting a fundraiser during December, and encouraging their fathers, brothers, husbands, boyfriends, partners and male friends to find out about bowel cancer and grow a beard for Decembeard®!

Bowel Cancer Australia is excited to feature volunteers from the NSW Central Coast as part of this year’s Decembeard Australia campaign, thanks to the generous support of photographer April Josie. In previous years, volunteers from Melbourne and Brisbane have taken took part in a similar photoshoot.

“Often one of the most compelling ways for people to take notice and become aware of an important issue, is to see that other people just like them are affected.” said Claire Annear, Bowel Cancer Australia’s Community Engagement Manager.

“By using real people and stories for Decembeard, we hope that people who come across the campaign materials stop and take note and realise, ‘That could be me, my husband, my brother, my dad,’” Ms Annear added.

Wanting to raise awareness that bowel cancer affects people of all ages; to emphasise the importance of bowel cancer screening; empower patients with the knowledge that they are now living beyond advanced bowel cancer; to raise funds for Bowel Cancer Australia for research into a cure; or to inspire others to cherish every day, each of our Decembeard® Australia Awareness Advocates have a very personal reason for joining Bowel Cancer Australia in helping to beat bowel cancer.

You can head to the Me, My Beard and Why page on the Decembeard® Australia website to read their inspiring stories, along with those of other Aussies helping to raise awareness and funds for Bowel Cancer Australia.

Decembeard® Australia's goal is to have a lasting impact on our health future - where no one dies of bowel cancer and all those diagnosed receive the support they need.
