Young Survivors’ Week is an international week dedicated to people under the age of 50, who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Although bowel cancer is often considered to be ‘an old person’s disease’, recent research has shown bowel cancer rates are rising in younger people.

Would you know if you were experiencing symptoms suggestive of bowel cancer?

Sometimes the burdens of life mount like a pressure cooker, exploding its lid and bursting with contents. Have I not had enough life lessons? Do I really need more?

Apparently yes, and with a little-added resistance. It just goes to show that when you think you know it all—or at least appear to be heading in the right direction—there’s still a blind spot. You can never know what’s in store for you.

With just one week until Bowel Cancer Awareness Month (June 1 – 30), new data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reveals a 1.6% increase in participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP).

Up from 37.3% in 2013-14, participation was marginally higher in 2014 - 2015 at 38.9%.

In real terms, that means only 4 out of every 10 people invited to participate in the tax-payer funded program actually do.

Connection fosters feelings of love, comfort, belonging and support, but bowel cancer patients and loved ones often say that those feelings are replaced by emotions such as fear, sadness, loneliness and rejection following a diagnosis.

At the time it can seem as if there is no one else who understands how you are feeling or what you are going through, and the feeling of being all alone can be overwhelming.

Bowel Cancer Australia wants to assure you that you are not alone.

In recognition of National Palliative Care week, Bowel Cancer Australia is helping to raise awareness and understanding about palliative care services in the Australian community.

For metastatic bowel cancer patients who have no further treatment options, community palliative care teams can assist in managing complex pain and treatment decisions, often in the comfort of a patient’s own home, making it possible to have quality time with family and friends visiting.
