Bowel Cancer Stories

I’ve seen the effects of bowel cancer first hand and know I never want to go through it. My Dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2000. He was just 49 years old. He had had some rectal bleeding and back pain so went to the GP who sent him for a colonoscopy.

After this plus scans and blood tests, Dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer which had spread to the liver. He had successful surgery to remove the cancer from the bowel but when the surgeons opened him up to remove the tumour from his liver, they discovered it had wrapped around the aorta so removal wasn’t possible.

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in May 2011 after experiencing changes to my bowel habits over approximately 2 months, which was followed by abdominal pain.  This led me to my GP who thought the stomach upsets were nothing serious so prescribed a reflux medication and sent me on my way.

I soon returned to my GP after experiencing rectal bleeding, when he then referred me for a faecal occult blood test immediately.

My name is Bridget Bennie I am 34 years old and a mum of a 3 and 1 year old. In May 2018 my world was rocked, when I was diagnosed with stage IIIa Bowel Cancer. I will always remember the date, because it was my daughter’s first birthday. At the time it was very important to me to delay my colonoscopy because I didn’t want the anesthetic to effect my breast milk. Funny the things that used to be so important.

I am an example of the value of regularly undertaking the in-home FIT test and the benefits of early bowel cancer detection.
I had been doing the Colovantage test for about 7 years with the result coming back each year as negative until late 2015 when the result came back positive.

I first started having symptoms in December 2018 - I had some blood in my bowel movements and stomach cramping while going to the toilet. At first, I thought it was food poisoning, but it continued to get worse. By mid-January 2019 there was a lot more blood, and cramping occurred more often, so I decided to get it checked out by my GP.
