Bowel Cancer Stories

My journey with bowel cancer came as a surprise to me, even though I have an extensive family history of the disease due to Lynch Syndrome (a type of inherited cancer of the digestive tract).

My mother, brother and uncle have all had bowel cancer and survived to tell the tale. I suppose I thought it wouldn’t happen to me as I have always been healthy, eaten lots of fruit and veggies plus I’m quite a positive person.

I was diagnosed at the age of 44 in 2015 with stage 3 bowel cancer.

I was working as a plasterer in Perth when diagnosed and had just been made redundant from working as a FIFO construction labourer.

I was lucky I did something after noticing some symptoms including a change in bowel movements, rectal bleeding and tiredness.

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2004 at the age of 60.

The only symptom I had experienced was rectal bleeding – not a lot, but enough to think it might be a problem – so I went to my GP. After looking into my family history, we think my grandmother might have had bowel cancer too, but these things were rarely diagnosed properly back then so we can’t be certain.

Where do I begin?

This time last year I was a happy, healthy 34 year old Mum to 3 gorgeous girls (one aged 11 and twins aged 6).

Well I thought I was healthy.
