Bowel Cancer Stories

In 2007, the government sent out free bowel cancer test kits to a range of people and I did my test as soon as I received it. The results indicated blood in my samples and I was told to see my GP immediately. I wasn't overly worried at this stage because I had seen blood in my stools on and off for some time and had always put this down to taking iron tablets, which can cause dietary problems like constipation.

After my GP appointment, things started to move very quickly, with a colonoscopy, blood tests, injections, a CT scan, an MRI and visits to a specialist surgeon.

My name is Nadine. I am a 33 year old mother to two girls and a personal trainer. I have always led a healthy lifestyle and never had any major health issues. Well at least I didn’t think I did.

Half way through 2014 I noticed I was getting frequent mild cramping in my lower abdomen. I had not long completed my first half marathon so I thought all the running may have made my stomach a little sensitive. I tried eliminating foods over the next few months but this did not make a difference. In fact, the cramping kept getting worse and more frequent, to the point I was doubled over on the toilet. In May last year I noticed some blood and I knew something wasn’t right.

In November 2013, at the age of 32, I had just had a career change after being made redundant and had plans to go on extended travels the following year when I mentioned to my boyfriend that I had experienced bleeding when I went to the toilet that had persisted for a few days on a number of occasions.

From Sydney, Australia. 45 years old. Working mum (2 kids). Ocean swimmer. Bad-ass from way back. Bowel cancer survivor. Now super-bad ass (but the journey was tough).

I was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer at age 31. As a tradie, father, husband and mostly healthy guy, or so I thought, I never thought I would hear the words ' its cancer'.
