Bowel Cancer Stories

Who would have thought that giving blood could lead to a diagnosis of bowel cancer?  I certainly never did.  In early 2009, I went along to my local blood bank to make a donation and was told I was anaemic.

I saw my GP who is, thankfully, very proactive and sent me for a range of tests to identify the cause of the anaemia.

Buying a $40 FOBT kit is so much cheaper when compared to your life.

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 40 after finally getting around to using an FOBT kit. I had purchased the kit in June 2012 and it sat in my cupboard until I finally used it in early September. The results came back positive.

Upon relocating to Queensland from New South Wales in October 2015, I registered with a GP in my local area, primarily to be able to get prescription renewals for blood pressure medication I was taking.

At the initial consultation my GP took a family history. After noting that my Grandmother on my mother's side had died from bowel cancer at the age of 53, my doctor suggested that I should have a colonoscopy as part of my health management plan.

I was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in July 2015 about one month after my 28th birthday. My gastroenterologist found the tumour by accident whilst I was having a colonoscopy to investigate an unrelated issue, ulcerative colitis – the cancer was stage 3.

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer (T4 N1 M0) on the 3rd June, 2010.

I went to my GP after I noticed bright red blood on the toilet paper and was booked in for a colonoscopy four days later, which is when they found the tumour.  Within 10 days of my diagnosis I had blood tests, a CT scan and two MRIs.  I saw two gastroenterologists, three colorectal surgeons and four oncologists. I researched hospitals, services and care teams.

My gastroenterologists told me I had a tumour that looked cancerous as I woke up from the colonoscopy.
