Ok, so apparently, I am a kick ass woman, who like many many others has her own story to share, so here goes!

Hi, my name’s Tamara and two and a half years ago I was diagnosed with bowel cancer – I was 40.

Looking back through my Facebook timeline I found a joke between a friend and me about constipation and squatting while pooping. In hindsight, this was most likely my first symptom of bowel cancer. That post was in June 2016 just before my 39th birthday. I was a busy single mum, working full time as a bookkeeper and volunteering as treasurer on the P&C of the kids’ school. On the off weeks when I didn’t have my 3 girls, I was dating and socialising with friends. Life was busy but fun and full of laughs.

Over the last 15 months I have learned many life lessons during this chapter of my life. Most of all, I have learned to put my health first and not to procrastinate because it may be embarrassing or require change. Just because it’s your normal, doesn’t mean it is normal. If you don’t feel right, it never hurts to have a conversation.

Kelly was vibrant 21 years old who loved her family and adored her friends. She enjoyed working in childcare but her passion in life was to travel the world and shopping.

In 2012 Kelly’s dream came true she was setting off to London to travel and work. She set off and found a place to live and found a job at the Elk Bar. Kelly fell in love with London and she loved travelling over to Ireland to see her family that she had never met before.

I am a 57 year old and I guess my diagnosis of bowel cancer did not come as a real shock. At 21 (1982) I was diagnosed with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and subsequently had a sub-total colectomy.
