Bowel Cancer Australia history
Bowel Cancer Australia was formed by a small team of specialists who were focused on a better health future not only for the patients they treated but for all Australians. With the support of a very generous patient donation in 2000, they teamed together to establish the charity now known as Bowel Cancer Australia, which stood as the only dedicated national charity aimed at raising awareness of and funding research into bowel cancer.
As health professionals committed to preventing, screening and treating bowel cancer, the team knew that only through increased funding for research, raising awareness, and encouraging people to screen for the disease, could Australians truly see a reduction in the alarmingly high rate of deaths from the disease.
From its humble beginnings, Bowel Cancer Australia has grown to become the leading community-funded charity dedicated to prevention, early diagnosis, research, quality treatment and care for everyone affected by bowel cancer.
Providing critical programs in every Australian State and Territory, as well as meaningful collaborations around the world, Bowel Cancer Australia makes real change happen across the entire continuum of care.
Our apple logo and charity colours
Bowel Cancer Australia's apple logo is symbolic of the charity's bowel cancer message: bowel cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable if detected early.
The outline of Bowel Cancer Australia's apple logo appears as an abstract of a human colon. The small hole in the apple is caused by a worm. If detected early and removed, the worm is unable to continue affecting the apple or the health of the tree.
It's the same with people. If bowel cancer is detected early it can be successfully treated, which means patients and their families can continue to enjoy a healthy life.
Both red and green apples are also a nutritious source of dietary fibre.
Why go red and green for Bowel Cancer Australia?
Red and green are the official colours of Bowel Cancer Australia chosen to reflect the bright colours of our apple symbol.
Bowel cancer affects both men and women of all ages and our unique Bowel Cancer Awareness Ribbon, incorporating our trademark red and green colours, was developed to reflect this.
Bowel Cancer Australia's Bowel Cancer Awareness Ribbon features the apple pin, and by proudly wearing a Bowel Cancer Awareness Ribbon you are showing your support for a charity dedicated to saving lives and improving the health and wellbeing of people living with bowel cancer.
