About Bowel Cancer Australia

Bowel Cancer Australia is a 100% community-funded national charity dedicated to prevention, early diagnosis, research, quality treatment and care, so everyone affected by bowel cancer can live their best life.

The charity is committed to championing what matters most to people affected by bowel cancer and has an ambitious strategy to realise its vision of having an everlasting impact where no Australian dies from bowel cancer and all those diagnosed receive the support they need

Bowel Cancer Australia makes real change happen across the entire continuum of care and has earned a leading role in its activities while working with health organisations, government, business and volunteers to further leverage its efforts and results.

In 2019, the charity, through the Bowel Cancer Research Foundation Australia, realised a long-term goal - the establishment of the $10.4 million Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research at the University of Sydney - in perpetuity.

Campaigns and initiatives such as Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, pharmacy-based screening programs BowelScreen Australia and BowelScreen Aotearoa (NZ)the Big Bowel Tour, and a world-first bowel cancer app, raise awareness among health professionals and the community about the importance of early detection and intervention in the successful treatment of bowel cancer.

Bowel Cancer Australia supports patients and loved ones living with bowel cancer through our Bowel Care Nurses, Nutritionists and Peer-to-Peer Support Network, as well as through the development of patient-reported experience measures (PREMs), a global standard set of patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs), and an unrivalled suite of patient resources.

Bowel Cancer Australia was named Best Small Charity of the Year 2019 at the national Third Sector Awards in recognition of its contribution to the third sector in a meaningful and impactful way that produces measurable benefits.

The charity’s strong, clear and purposeful vision and mission; engagement of stakeholders through innovative and unique marketing initiatives; impactful collaborations that drive organisational purpose; and design of solutions based on system-level change, were all cited as reasons why it was chosen as the inaugural recipient.

The charity’s Home of Australia’s Second Deadliest Cancer won the 2019 ADMA Creativity & Effectiveness Award (AC&E) for Best Campaign - Not for Profit; the 2019 PRIA Golden Target Award Pro Bono Campaign – National Winner; and the 2019 Siren Client Award in recognition of its ability to cut-through the noise with a compelling story.

In recognition of excellence in commitment and success in a health-focused mission, Bowel Cancer Australia was awarded NGO of the Year at the 2017 PRIME Annual Awards. Nomination and selection of a winner for the award was made by members of the healthcare industry, who gather each year to recognise the best and most effective work in Australian healthcare and pharmaceuticals.

This is the third time Bowel Cancer Australia has been recognised by PRIME for excellence. In 2016, Bowel Cancer Australia was honoured for Excellence in Patient/Customer Support, following the release of the bowel cancer app. In 2014, the charity received the Corporate Social Responsibility Award for the My Cancer My Voice campaign.

Determined to create positive change across the continuum of care, Bowel Cancer Australia continues to lead the call for timely access to colonoscopy; increased availability of affordable treatment options; and implementation of patient-reported experience and outcome measures.

Bowel Cancer Australia is grateful to the many people who do a fantastic job in raising funds for our charity, and we are also indebted to our patrons, ambassadors, volunteers, donors and corporate partners, all of whom provide invaluable support for our work.

Vision and Mission

Vision and Mission

Bowel Cancer Australia's vision is to have an everlasting impact on our health future - where no Australian dies from bowel cancer and all those diagnosed receive the support they need.

Bowel Cancer Australia is the leading community-funded charity dedicated to prevention, early diagnosis, research, quality treatment and the best care for everyone affected by bowel cancer.

We make real change happen across the entire continuum of care -
  • We challenge perceptions through dynamic campaigning that raises awareness and motivates action;
  • We increase health knowledge and understanding through the provision of practical information and programs;
  • We champion what matters most to people affected by bowel cancer and empower them with the tools and knowledge to be advocates for their own health;
  • We provide practical and emotional support for the growing number of Australians affected by bowel cancer, building communities through shared experiences and creating a powerful voice for change;
  • We campaign for access to quality treatment and best care, to ensure more people live beyond bowel cancer;
  • We fund research as it is the only way to discover a cure for bowel cancer; and
  • We raise money to continue our life-saving work and inspire others to do the same.
We thank our many enthusiastic fundraisers, corporate partners and supporters across the country for their generosity.

Logo and Colours

Bowel Cancer Australia's apple logo and charity colours

Bowel Cancer Australia's apple logo is symbolic of the charity's bowel cancer message: bowel cancer is treatable and beatable if detected early.

The outline of Bowel Cancer Australia's apple logo appears as an abstract of a human colon. The small hole in the apple is caused by a worm. If detected early and removed, the worm is unable to continue affecting the apple or the health of the tree.

It's the same with people. If bowel cancer is detected early it can be successfully treated, so people can continue to enjoy a healthy life.

Both red and green apples are also a nutritious source of dietary fibre.

Why go red and green for Bowel Cancer Australia?

Red and green are the official colours of Bowel Cancer Australia, chosen to reflect the bright colours of our apple symbol.

Our Bowel Cancer Awareness Ribbon incorporates our red and green colours and features the charity's trademark apple pin.

Ribbons are available for purchase through Bowel Cancer Australia's online shop.
