The It’s Crunch Time™ campaign was launched by the Commonwealth Government Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Tony Abbott MP on Friday, 2 June 2006. The campaign is a self-funding employee and community awareness initiative of the Institute alerting Australians to the major risks of bowel cancer. The aim of which is to prevent bowel cancer through early detection and increased public education and awareness of the risk factors associated with the disease. By purchasing and wearing an apple pin you are helping to raise awareness of a disease that kills 80 Australians every week. The Institute offers free ‘digestive health’ workplace seminars for organisations that support the campaign. All money raised from apple pin sales will fund additional It’s Crunch Time™ employee and community awareness initiatives. In 2007, the campaign was used to promote participation by eligible Australians in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. The Program is being phased in over a number of years by the Commonwealth Government, commencing in August 2006. Initially, screening will be offered to Australians turning 55 or 65 years of age between 1 May 2006 and 30 June 2008, and those who were involved in the Pilot Program that ran from November 2002 to June 2004. The second phase of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program commenced on 1 July 2008 and offers testing to people turning 50, 55 or 65 years of age between January 2008 and December 2010.
