An online education program for nurses is helping improve the care and support of patients with metastatic bowel cancer.
When bowel cancer has spread to organs such as the liver or lungs, treatment options often focus on preventing further spread of the disease and maintaining quality of life rather than an attempt to cure.
The mCRC:CARE program covers a range of physical, psychological, social and emotional issues associated with the management of advanced bowel cancer.
Importantly, the program offers perspectives on improving communication with patients and empowering them in their decision making.
Specific topics include managing the side effects on advanced disease and its treatment, bowel dysfunction, stoma care and sexual function.
The program is endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing Australia as part of its Life Long Learning Program for nurses and supported by Roche Products.
mCRC:CARE is one of many professional development opportunities for health professionals in the area of bowel cancer.
